I spent many years as an aquarist. Had everything from goldfish to a reef tank. The last fish I had was a Beta. They are one of my favorites. Beautiful fish that are easy to care for. Don't need anything more than a large glass container (and possibly a heater) to keep them in. Don't over feed them and do a partial water change every month and they will live for years. I like the fact that you can "color coordinate" them with your room décor.

Hey someone.
Yeah I have heater and a bubble filter in a 3.5 gal for him. Basic set up but better than just a bowl. I boil water to burn off clorine , cool and replace. Three pellets of food in the am, two in the pm.
For the 55 I'm went with two 300 gph loggerheads on undergravel. I had that set up with my 75 and worked well. Rarely had to cha be water as with the live plants it really becomes a self sustaining ecosystem. The tank kit came with a bang on the back filter but planning on not using it.
Excited about LED lights in today's world.

Ecosystem is the way to go. Easy in fresh water tanks. A must in reef (live coral) tanks. Lighting was very important in reef tanks, spent a fortune in bulbs. Couldn't have many fish in a reef. They make to much poop....and all the food is not good either. If I were ever to get back into fish tanks, I'd probably go with fresh water community fish.......easy.....er.

Yeah never had a desire for salt. Great choice in a pool not fishtanks.

interesting. When i bought my male guppies, i got three of dark ones and two of a light yellow. One of the the yellow crapped out within 24 hours. It happens. So watching him the next week or two in the small take with the dark ones e was always subdued in fact thought maybe he was sickly and going the way of the other. Then for two days I saw the three dark ones picking on him, alot. Chasing, biting, etc. So since i had gotten my 55 up and stabilized for about a week I felt safe to grab him and throw him in the 55. After a day or two he was noticeably more happy and moving about the tank. added some structure (long and stuff)last night and now he is all over the place. I think my dark guppies were ganging up on a 'fish of a different color'. I don't think I'll put them together again.

Those Plecostomus are one hell of an algae eating fish. If you want to see another fish with crazy eyes, go check out a Dog Faced Puffer in the saltwater section of the aquarium.
